The Death of Leo Boer

Leo Boer died on 5 June 2020 and was buried on 18 June. Not two weeks later, on 1 July 2020, Frederik went to the police to report possible foul play or a situation that could have led to the death of Leo Boer. For evidentiary reasons, he made his statement under oath in a notarial deed. He also said he was making the statement out of respect for Nabod of Leo Boer.

Frederik, once a close co-worker of Leo Boer, used his statement to commit character assassination on Luna Vermeulen. He painted her as a “witch” who took control of the situation. As he expressed it, “With regard to her he had no balls; she ran Senior’s life from the very first”.

He told how Luna Vermeulen denied her husband food in 2014. Also the gourmet pork sandwich. Luna Vermeulen put Leo Boer on machines and kept him from the outside world starting in about 2015/2016, and forced him to visit all kinds of medical and health clinics. The man finished his testimony with the following statement:

“In 2020, just before his death, Luna Vermeulen gave her husband oxygen in a Swiss hotel. The management made the couple leave the hotel and then, it appears, Leo Boer died.”

This is far from the truth.

Fortunately, the notary reminded him that making a false statement qualified as perjury and could be punished with a fine of €621,750 and a six-year prison sentence.

Leo Boer, the sociable family man

After investigation and personal findings, I can tell you that Frederik is better off turning himself in to the police for perjury. The reason I wanted to get to the bottom of this story is that many people, including employees and former employees, even staff of SWB Shipyard, are starting to believe Frederik. That’s why I am telling the Truth about the death of Leo Boer.

Frederik was always tolerated by Leo Boer, but he always found Frederik unequal to the tasks set for him. I asked Leo Boer many times why he kept people on his payroll who were not qualified for their work. Leo always answered, “I just couldn’t send them away. What would they do then? Oh well, it’ll be all right…”

Then he would slap me on the back and say, “How about a beer, my friend?”

Leo eventually married Luna Vermeulen, whom I had introduced to him in 2009 after the stranding of the Margaret near Jacobsbaai. She fell for him and he for her. Leo did find Luna to be “a lot of woman” and “a handful”.

Later, I was curious how she would behave on board the Barracuda, Leo Boer’s motorboat. Whenever I saw her she was wearing dressy outfits and high heels, and you don’t easily imagine that type as a sailor. When I asked about it, his answer came straight from the heart: “Great! I couldn’t ask for a better first mate. Really the best!” And Leo Boer beamed from ear to ear.

Leo met Luna op de Barracuda.
Leo with Luna on, the Barracuda.

What many people around him didn’t understand is that Leo, a man who sometimes had a girlfriend but never a family life, loved his new life with Luna. Luna came with three daughters and grandchildren. Leo was besotted with them. And Luna took him on vacations, spoiled him and many times, helped him out of financial problems—problems caused by men like Frederik and (MM) who piled one blunder on top of another. We’ll go into that in the next episode. But first, let’s take a closer look at the serious allegations brought by Frederik.

Deceit

Leo Boer was never isolated from the outside world. In March and April 2018, we – Peter Stuivenberg and Maaike Kallenborn – visited Leo Boer in Sliedrecht and he was in the best of health. We made some recordings for a video about Rabobank and how the bank was financially deceiving Leo Boer.

Later, in September, Leo and I were working on my sailboat in Saldanha and drank a friendly beer at an outdoor cafe. He ate fish, not pork, and kept to his diet. He understood quite well that the tumours he’d been suffering from since 2014, which were surgically removed, could come back at any time. A strict diet was a ‘conditio sine qua non’. We made plans with Leo and Luna in Saldanha to sail to the Caribbean and spent hours programming the software for weather programmes and the automatic navigation system of the Barracuda

Leo became unwell in July 2019, when he left with the Barracuda for the Caribbean. He decided to go to the Mediterranean. In Barcelona he became seriously ill; he had to turn around. When they returned, Luna took him to all kinds of top-notch private clinics where they tried to cure him and arrangements were made for admission to hospital. The costs, up to Leo Boer’s death, ran to €500,000.

Leo’s illness and death

Back to the (false) accusation under oath.

In February 2020, in a hospital in The Hague, Leo Boer underwent surgery on a tumour in a vertebra. The operation was a success. The next day, the hospital gave him a cheese sandwich, which his intestines, still in a state of shock, could not handle. He suffered an intestinal blockage which weakened him by the hour. After a couple of days of threats to sue, Boer underwent surgery. He promptly contracted an infection from dangerous hospital bacteria. He fought death for days, and finally recovered after 14 days. Leo and Luna decided to go to a clinic in Switzerland for rehabilitation. Due to Covid, he could not be transported in an ambulance. They flew by helicopter to Belgium, stayed in another hospital for a few days for further treatment, then continued on their way.

In Switzerland the rehabilitation went very well. Unfortunately, after a time the doctors discovered a sharp increase in the number of cancer cells. Leo and Luna immediately departed, again in an ambulance helicopter, for the only clinic in Europe that programmes white blood cells to attack cancer cells.

This is called immunotherapy, and has a different approach than chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery, reinforcing the patient’s immune system without weakening the body elsewhere. Because Frederik and Nabod think Luna Vermeulen took her husband to shady clinics, I provide a quote here from the website of Immunotherapie Nederland.

[Quote]

For this treatment, one of the five types of white blood cells, monocytes, is extracted from the patient by taking a blood sample. These monocytes are checked in a laboratory for healthy structure and then developed into dendritic cells and programmed to recognise cancer cells. Dendritic cells have a special natural ability: they not only recognise all cells that are foreign to the body, but they can also communicate information about these cells to other cells, which in their turn also respond. Then T lymphocytes (the “natural killer” (NK) cells) in the blood start fighting the cancer cells. In short, the reprogrammed white blood cells now attack the cancer cells more aggressively. Antigens to the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) are also added to the dendritic cells. The cells are then injected back into the patient. These cells then communicate to the NK cells to attack tumour cells. Moreover, other T-cells (helper cells) ensure that these antigens are committed to memory. That way, long-lasting immunity to the antigens is established.

[End quote]

The treatment was expensive. The patient spent his days in the clinic and rested at a hotel overnight. Every day he was transported to the clinic and back in an ambulance. The cancer cells diminished, but a stubborn type formed a malignant tumour in the brain. Leo Boer was taken to the Intensive Care of a hospital, where eventually my friend was admitted for further treatment.

He was taken from the ICU and put in a room somewhere down in the hospital. When the doctors said, “This is no way to die,” he was taken in an ambulance with doctors in attendance back to the penthouse of the hotel where Luna and Leo had been staying. That is where Leo Boer finally died. The next morning, the time and cause of death were recorded and the body released for transport in a hearse.

The medical statement reproduced below shows the desperate, but hopeless medical situation of Leo Boer.

medical situation of Leo Boer

I visited Dr Yusuf Gunes, a doctor in an expensive private clinic that the ordinary person wouldn’t usually visit because of the cost. If someone has an illness such as a possible tumour in an organ, practically no expense is spared in determining what kind of tumour it is and what the best treatment would be. The patient doesn’t receive a bill; you give them your credit card and they find the best existing treatment for the malady.

It’s time for Frederik and Nabod to end their witch hunt against Luna Vermeulen. From 2013/2014, Luna took her husband from one clinic and hospital to another, sparing no expense to find any therapy that might save Leo’s life. From China to Germany. Because Leo’s body had become so weak, Leo first fought against tumours in his intestine, lungs, and back before he finally died of a tumour in his brain, she made sure he had the best food in the world.

The last three months

17 March 2020 – 03:51 (translated from Luna’s Afrikaans)

Good morning, everybody!
Leo is still the same! He’s fighting hard.
He now has 2 bacteria in his blood
From the hospitals in the Netherlands and Belgium
He had a blood test when we got here and this is clear!
Pseudomonas and Enterococcus
This is certainly sepsis in the blood and it’s life-threatening
This is why he got so sick the first Saturday night after the stomach operation and was put in the ICU
Well
He still has it and got another one as well
This is life-threatening
And both of us kept in quarantine because it is highly contagious
They are now trying antibiotics that have been tested to work on both bacteria
He is already on strong antibiotics, 12,000 mg per day!
His intestines are working now, at least a little, so yesterday they started him on mashed potatoes.
Gotta go. Will keep you posted.
Thanks and greetings,
Luna

The antibiotics have not been able to destroy them completely
We started another new antibiotic late last week, so now he’s taking two kinds
This is now 14 days already but Dr is positive that Leo must rest and sleep and he’ll get better
He’s eating well and everything, but he’s still tired and weak

4 June 2020 – 04:59 (translated from Luna’s Afrikaans)

Leo is getting worse

I am going to the hospital now

On 5 June, Leo Boer died in Luna Vermeulen’s arms in the penthouse of the hotel. Both dozed off in the evening and when Luna woke up, she was holding a dead Leo Boer in her arms.

I got the call.

My friend was dead.

Hans picked up Luna Vermeulen and said goodbye to his dead mentor.

Nabod wanted to bury his father, but forgot to apply for a copy of the death certificate, which meant that during the pandemic he could not fly from Australia to the Netherlands. Forgotten—now, perhaps. He realised this one day before the funeral. Of course, he couldn’t get the death certificate in time with all the will in the world. Luna Vermeulen was blamed for this. This ‘clear language’ was sent from Nabod on 25 August:

From that month onward, the threats and unfounded accusations began to fly. Here’s one example out of many:
